At the 78th World Health Assembly (WHA78) in May 2025, WHO member states agreed on a new 10-year strategy for traditional, complementary, and integrative medicine: the “Global Strategy on Traditional Medicine 2025–2034.”Strengthening evidence, improving safety and regulatory frameworks, and integrating these practices into healthcare systems have been officially recognized as global challenges.

However, Japan lacks official statistics on the actual use of these practices, and there was virtually no foundational Japanese-language material providing an overview of global systems and usage patterns. This report was prepared to fill this gap, drawing on both primary sources from governments and international organizations and peer-reviewed research.

■ Key Findings of the Report

・According to peer-reviewed international reviews (36 studies across 11 countries), the median usage rate over the past 12 months was 3.9%. The highest rate was in Switzerland, where homeopathy is covered by basic health insurance

・In India, under the dedicated “Ministry of AYUSH,” there are approximately 240,000 registered homeopathic physicians, 196 universities offering homeopathy programs, and about 7,500 government-run clinics

・Following a 2009 national referendum (with approximately two-thirds voting in favor), Switzerland has included four fields—including classical homeopathy—in the benefits covered by mandatory basic health insurance since 2017

・The United Kingdom (2018) and France (2021) ended public funding based on an official determination that there was insufficient scientific evidence. Germany will also exclude these treatments from statutory insurance coverage starting January 2027, following a legislative amendment in July 2026

・Although estimates of the global market size for 2025 vary widely among research firms—ranging from $5.4 billion to $15.5 billion—all predict growth
