■Reconstruction of station buildings and other railway-related facilities with 3D printer architecture
Due to labor shortages and other issues, JR West is faced with the challenge of updating and maintaining station buildings and other related facilities. In addition, construction of station buildings and other facilities adjacent to railroad tracks is constrained by the need to perform work at night, when trains are not in operation.
Serendix's 3D printed housing has the advantage of unparalleled speed of construction, with construction* being completed in 24 hours or less. The shortened construction period significantly reduces labor and other costs, thereby contributing to lower construction costs. In addition, the concrete construction makes it possible to use the building for a longer period of time than wooden buildings, and it also has high earthquake resistance. *Serendix10 frame construction time
Against this backdrop, MHI and the JR West Group have entered into a capital and business alliance with the aim of using 3D printer construction to reconstruct station buildings and other railway-related facilities in need of renewal, and have issued new shares to JR West Innovations through a third-party allotment.
Using this capital and business alliance as a foothold, we will accelerate the development of our 3D printing technology to be used not only for residential buildings but also for a wide range of other applications.
Comment from Mr. Ryo Kawamoto, President and Representative Director of JR West Innovations
The JR West Group has set forth "Our Aspiration," which is our raison d'etre for the future society, and "Long-Term Vision 2032," which is our ideal vision for the next 10 years, and we are continuing to take on new challenges and promote innovation with various partners to realize these goals.
Serendix's 3D printing technology will make it possible to proceed with construction efficiently even in a limited amount of time, which is expected to significantly shorten the construction period and at the same time reduce costs. Through this alliance, Serendix will steadily promote the renewal of railroad facilities even as labor shortages become an issue, thereby enhancing the sustainability of railroads and contributing to the realization of the long-term vision of "safe, secure, and environmentally friendly transportation for people and the earth.
Serendix CEO Hiroyasu Koma comments
Our vision is to "enrich humanity with the world's most advanced homes," and we are working to realize a new digital society where people can "buy a new house for the price of a car" by drastically reducing construction costs through robotic construction.
I have heard that the recent surge in construction costs has affected not only ordinary houses, but also public transportation, the means of transportation for the people. In order to continue to provide inexpensive, high-quality service, a key factor is to reduce operating costs without lowering quality.
First, based on the proven serendix10 technology, we will work with JR West to build an attractive station building that reduces labor costs by drastically shortening the construction period, while also reducing maintenance costs with a sturdy structure. By proactively utilizing new ideas and technologies that are not bound by existing concepts, we hope to contribute to the maintenance of high-quality local public transportation and, by extension, to the revitalization of local communities.
