■ Three Features of “YOSUMI”

YOSUMI Illustration
1. Structure Utilizing the Traditional Architectural Technique “Kumite”
The structure is built entirely by hand using the traditional Japanese architectural technique of “kumite,” in which solid wood pieces are precisely joined without any adhesives or metal fasteners. It can be reassembled as many times as needed, and there are no traces of metal fasteners left behind.
2. Modular Design That Adapts to Your Lifestyle
By combining identical parts, you can freely adjust the number and size of shelves. A single unit can be assembled by one person in about 3 minutes without any tools.
3. Versatile for Various Uses and Life Stages
From home storage and soft room dividers to shop and office fixtures and exhibition displays, it adapts to a wide range of uses and spatial changes.

■ The Background Behind the Creation of “YOSUMI”
Since Reiwa 6, the city of Kurashiki has been implementing an awareness and promotion campaign for “design-driven management” aimed at bringing out the identity and strengths of local businesses and fostering new business development. Moriya Kagu-ten participated in this initiative to overcome management challenges—such as reliance on revenue from the restoration of cultural properties—and to shift from a contract-based model to cultivating its own brand.
Through a series of six dialogues with a design producer, the company decided to shift its concept toward furniture that prominently features its strength: traditional woodworking techniques. By refining this approach into modular furniture that applies the technique of “creating structures using only the natural contours of wood”—a method used in crafting shoji screens and architectural joinery—to modern living, the company achieved the significant milestone of winning the Good Design Award.
