Mallet Japan October Auction

Mallet Auction’s October sale will be held on Thursday, October 1, 2026.

The auction will feature two sales held on the same day: the M-LIVE Auction, a live-streamed online auction, and the regular venue sale. A total of 197 lots will be offered.

Mallet Japan October Auction Catalogue

The October auction features a diverse selection of works by Japanese and international artists. Highlights include 13 lots by Yayoi Kusama, who passed away in August this year. The selection includes two unique works: the canvas work "LIFE (PPEP)" and the shikishi work "Butterfly", as well as all 10 works from the portfolio 'Amour pour toujours'.

Lot 90: Yves Tanguy, "Untitled"

Gracing the cover of the catalogue is Lot 90, Untitled, a gouache on paper by Yves Tanguy.

Yves Tanguy (1900–1955) was a French artist and one of the leading figures of Surrealism. He is known for his dreamlike landscapes, in which mysterious organic forms appear within vast, seemingly boundless spaces. These landscapes are a defining feature of Tanguy’s work.

Painted in 1938, "Untitled" dates from an important period in Tanguy’s life and career. Around this time, he met the American artist Kay Sage, who would later become his wife. Softly rendered forms appear across the expansive composition, blending into the surrounding space. Together, they create a dreamlike landscape unlike the real world. The painting is a good example of the style Tanguy developed during his mature period.

Lots 88 and 89, two paintings by Alekos Fassianos, are also among the highlights of the auction.

Alekos Fassianos (1935–2022) is regarded as one of the leading Greek artists of the postwar period. Drawing inspiration from Greek history, mythology, and everyday life, he combined classical motifs with a modern and highly individual style.

His paintings are characterized by flat forms and bold lines, with figures, wind, animals, and other elements often creating a strong sense of movement and vitality.

In "Cycliste vainqueur", a figure rides a bicycle with his hair flowing in the wind. The contemporary subject is presented in Fassianos’ characteristic style, giving the scene a timeless quality.

In the large-scale work "Rencontre", a seated figure extends his hand toward a bird carrying a stalk of wheat in its beak. Birds, wheat, and insects are recurring motifs in Fassianos’ work, often associated with life, renewal, and nature. Here, these familiar motifs come together in a simple and poetic scene between a person and the natural world.

The M-Live Auction, an online-only sale, will also be held on the same day.

The auction features a diverse selection of works by renowned Japanese and international artists, including original works by Kiyoshi Saito, Saburo Aso, Gyoji Nomiyama, and Jean Fusaro, as well as prints by Taro Okamoto, Lee Ufan, Takashi Murakami, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, and Joan Miró.
