Shosenkyo, renowned for having Japan’s most beautiful gorge, derives its name from “Kakuen Peak,” its main peak. Long ago, Kakuen—a disciple of Zen Master Takuan—underwent spiritual training on its summit, which is large enough to lay several tatami mats.It is a scenic spot that has been awarded 1st place in the “Gorges” category of the “Top 100 Tourist Destinations in Japan” and 2nd place in the “Top 100 Scenic Views of the Heisei Era.”
*“Kakuen Peak” was formed by the weathering and erosion of granite; it is steep and rises vertically for approximately 180 meters. Designated as a National Special Place of Scenic Beauty, Mitake Shosenkyo is renowned as a prime spot for viewing autumn foliage.
Starting with Kakuen Peak, unusual rock formations can be seen everywhere within the gorge, and the autumn foliage in Shosenkyo reaches its peak from late October to mid-November.
