■ [Giant Gourmet] “Giant Castle Gourmet” inspired by Lord Tanuma Okitsugu, a historical figure associated with Makinohara
●About Lord Tanuma Okitsugu
Lord Tanuma Okitsugu devoted himself to restoring the Edo Shogunate’s finances, and his hometown of Makinohara is dotted with various historical sites where visitors can trace his footsteps. Lord Tanuma Okitsugu, who governed the area around present-day Makinohara City, built Sagara Castle in the mid-Edo period. The town was developed in the style of a castle town, and with the construction of roads such as the Tanuma Kaido leading to the Tokaido, Sagara Castle was completed in the 9th year of the An’ei era. However, it is known as “Japan’s shortest-lived castle,” having been demolished just eight years later by order of the shogunate.
● Lord Tanuma Okitsugu’s Banquet Meal: Roadside Station Soratto Makinohara 1st Anniversary ~ The Banquet of Sagara Castle Revived Here ~
Thanks to the support of the local community, Roadside Station Soratto Makinohara has reached its first anniversary. To commemorate this milestone, we have created the “Lord Tanuma Okitsugu Celebration Banquet Set” (advance reservation required)—a luxurious three-tiered lacquered box modeled after the castle, from the moat to the main keep, generously featuring local ingredients—inspired by the celebratory banquets once held at Sagara Castle.Approximately 250 years ago, the Sagara area of Makinohara was home to “Sagara Castle,” built by Lord Tanuma Okitsugu, who is increasingly being reevaluated as a renowned ruler. Lord Okitsugu not only built Sagara Castle but also developed the castle town, improved the port and highways, and made significant contributions to the region’s development.Rising from a hatamoto with a stipend of just 600 koku to become the daimyo of the Sagara Domain with 57,000 koku, he shaped the course of history as a roju of the Edo Shogunate, and Sagara Castle stood as a symbol of that prosperity. In reference to these “57,000 koku,” the price is set at 5,700 yen.The “Lord Tanuma Okitsugu Commemorative Banquet Meal” is served on a specially crafted “castle-shaped tray” and features the bounty of Suruga Bay, the bounty of the Makinohara region, and the tea culture of Makinohara—Japan’s premier tea-producing region. This special 10-day celebration embodies the history of Makinohara dating back to the construction of Sagara Castle, our gratitude for the Roadside Station’s first anniversary, and our hopes for the region’s continued development into the future.

■ About “Roadside Station Soratto Makinohara”
Makinohara City in Shizuoka Prefecture is known as the “Town of Tea,” boasting Japan’s largest tea plantations. Since the land was first cultivated during the Meiji period, a rich tea culture has thrived here, centered around the “Makinohara Grand Tea Plantation,” which spans a total area of approximately 5,000 hectares.Look up and you’ll see airplanes taking off from the airport; look around and you’ll see tea fields stretching out like waves. “Roadside Station Soratto Makinohara” opened in July 2025 at this very spot where sky and earth meet.
Featuring a farmers’ market selling a wide variety of vegetables, fruits, seafood, and souvenirs directly from local producers, as well as shops offering matcha-based sweets and a bakery, the facility serves as a hub for showcasing the city’s cultural, historical, and natural attractions—all centered around cuisine that highlights the bountiful gifts of the sea and mountains—to share the charm of Makinohara City.
