About Ibaraki Prefecture melons, which are at their peak in June
Ibaraki Prefecture has been Japan's largest producer of melons for 26 consecutive years. Melon cultivation flourishes in Ibaraki because the prefecture is blessed with little snowfall, typhoons, and other weather-related disasters, as well as well-drained land and a mild climate, both of which are indispensable for producing delicious melons. A wide variety of melons are grown in the prefecture, so visitors can enjoy a variety of melons at different times of the year from April to October. The following is a list of the main melons that are shipped from May onward.
Ibaraki King: The name "Ibaraki King" is derived from the wish that it will become the king of melons in Ibaraki (Ibaraki). Its elegant aroma, sweetness, and fine, juicy flesh are its charm.
Andes: A representative spring melon, this green-fleshed melon is characterized by its thick flesh, rich sweetness, and rich aroma.
Quincy: A red-fleshed melon with beautiful orange flesh. The flesh is thick, dense, sweet and juicy.
Takami: Long and narrow, with a fine mesh and a thin net, characterized by its tight flesh and dark green color.
Earl's melon: A high quality melon characterized by its mellow taste and aroma, and melting in the mouth. It is a top-class melon with a beautiful three-dimensional net pattern.
