Background of "Osaka Ranma Art," where tradition and innovation intersect

Osaka Ranma is one of the traditional Japanese wood crafts that has continued since the Edo period, and is known for its exquisite carving techniques and high artistic quality. Its outstanding technique and cultural value have been officially recognized, and in 1975 it was recognized as a "traditional craft" by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, and in 1986 as a "traditional craft" by the Governor of Osaka Prefecture. However, due to changes in housing styles and lifestyles, demand for ranma has been declining year by year.

Okamoto Meibokuten Co., Ltd. wanted to "not only preserve tradition, but also create new value that harmonizes with modern life and space," and together with artist Tomoo Nishidate, began developing "Osaka Ranma Art," a fusion of traditional techniques and modern art.

This initiative is not only a mere inheritance of traditional crafts, but also a new challenge to rediscover local culture and to show the attractiveness of Japanese wood crafts to the world.

Adoption and media development on Asuka III - a new stage for traditional crafts

On Asuka III, a luxury cruise ship that went into service on July 20, 2025, the "ASUKAIII meets 47 prefectures" project was implemented, in which artworks representing the 47 prefectures of Japan were displayed in the cabins.

The "Osaka Ranma Art," selected as the representative of Osaka Prefecture, is permanently displayed as wall hanging art in the "Midship Suite" staterooms of the Asuka III to convey the beauty of Japanese traditions to passengers from Japan and abroad.

TV interviews and commercial filming were also conducted to convey the appeal of the artwork and other onboard artworks, and the first broadcast was made on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at around 10:55 a.m. during BS Asahi's program "World Cruise" and "Asuka Story. The program is scheduled to be aired on board the ship and in various media in the future, and is attracting attention as a new center for the transmission of traditional crafts.

Osaka Ranma Art" was exhibited at Asuka III, and then at the Kansai International Airport Lounge (March 2025) and  Expo Osaka/Kansai (May and August 2025).

In addition, the products are scheduled to go on sale to the general public through Okamoto Meibokuten's own website and Asuka III's e-commerce site, offering a new way to incorporate traditional crafts into daily life.

These efforts are aimed at reaffirming the value of traditional crafts and expanding Japanese wood craft culture to diverse audiences in Japan and abroad. We will continue to contribute to the creation of a new culture where tradition and modernity coexist by strengthening our outreach to a wide range of audiences, including industry and art professionals, the interior goods industry, and general consumers.
