Purpose
Komin Kawamoto, a Dutch scholar at the end of the Edo period who is said to have been the first Japanese to brew beer, was born in Sanda City, the hometown of Komin Kawamoto. Sanda City, the hometown of Komin Kawamoto, will hold the "Sanda Beer Certification Test" to honor his achievements and enterprising spirit. This unique certification test is designed to familiarize participants with the history, culture, and climate of Sanda, as well as its rich food culture, while learning about the history and brewing of beer.
About Koumin Kawamoto
Kohmin Kawamoto, a Dutch scholar at the end of the Edo period, was born in 1810 as the third son of Shuyasu Kawamoto, a doctor of the Sanda domain. He translated Western books at Bansho Shojo and was the first to use the word "chemistry," and is considered the "founder of modern chemistry in Japan. He is also said to have been the first Japanese to successfully conduct a beer brewing experiment around the end of the Edo period in 1853. He also succeeded in the production of matches and photography, and a monument in honor of his achievements has been erected in front of the school gate of Sanda Elementary School.
Outline of the Sanda Beer Test
Date : November 3, 2025 (Monday, holiday) from 2:00 p.m.
Place: Sanda City Community Development Cooperation Center
Qualification :20 years old or older (as of November 3, 2025)
Capacity : 200 people
Test fee: 3,000 yen per person (pair/group discounts available)
Content :50 questions, 4-option format
Required questions: Beer culture 15 questions (30%)
History and Culture of Sanda 15 questions (30%)
Optional Beer Culture or Sanda's Historical Culture 20 questions (40%)
Passing Criterion :Beginner level 60% or more of correct answers
(For first-time test takers, please take the Beginner's Level test.)
Intermediate: 60% or more correct answers for those who have passed the Beginner's Level test.
Advanced: 70% or more of correct answers in Intermediate level
Shodan For those who have passed the Advanced level, 80% or more of the correct answers are required.
Nidan: 80% or above on correct answers for those who have passed Shodan
Nidan, 80% or more of the correct answers are correct.
Yondan 3-dan candidates must answer at least 80% of the questions correctly.
All questions are the same. There is no grade-skipping.
Privileges: A certificate and badge will be given to those who pass the test.
Certificate and extra prize will be awarded to those who pass with perfect score.
The highest ranked group (the applicant with the highest total score of the top three applicants)
The highest scoring pair (the pair with the highest total score) will also receive a certificate and an extra prize.
The top five highest-scoring applicants and beginner-level applicants with 60 points,
The highest scoring pair will receive a supplementary prize.
Others: After the certification test, an explanation of the answers to the test questions will be held at the same venue from around 4:00 p.m.
A separate meeting for successful applicants is scheduled for February 15, 2026 (Sun.).

Also this year, there will be open seminars such as a beer seminar at Osaka Keizai University (held on July 12), a town walk on the theme of Urakawa Town (held on September 27), and a visit to the Kirin Beer Kobe factory!
