Mallet Japan July Auction
Mallet Japan
Mallet Japan will host its upcoming auction of Modern and Contemporary Art on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at its venue in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo.
The auction will consist of two sales held on the same day: the online-exclusive livestream M-Live Auction, and the in-person Modern & Contemporary Art Sale #250717.
●Auctioned Artworks
The July auction will feature approximately 208 artworks. Below are some of the highlights.
Cover Photo
The cover of the July auction catalogue features Lot 15, Turtle by Andy Warhol.
This refreshing blue-toned work was created for the British film Turtle Diary, released in 1985, which follows a story of sea turtles in the London Zoo and the people who set them free.
Two years prior, Warhol completed his Endangered Species series, focused on animals facing extinction. From that point forward, his interest in wildlife conservation became increasingly apparent.
The sea turtles in this work are painted in vibrant, unnatural tones—paradoxically symbolizing both the beauty and the liberation of nature.

Next is Lot 101, La cascade, Mortain by Gustave Loiseau, one of the leading figures of French Post-Impressionism.
After studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Loiseau moved to Pont-Aven near the Atlantic coast, where he encountered Paul Gauguin, who had a strong influence on him.
Loiseau is known for painting landscapes and street scenes that capture the nuances of natural light and seasonal changes.
The Mortain Waterfalls, a famous site in Normandy, is a subject Loiseau returned to several times. In this work, the cascade and surrounding canyon are rendered with meticulous brushwork and dynamic composition.
