Recently in Spain, there has been a growing trend toward "flamenco contemporary," which seeks freer and more artistic expression, especially in the area of dance, while still following the traditional flamenco tradition.
Following in the footsteps of pioneers such as Israel Galván and Rocío Molina, some young artists are experimenting individually and in groups. The Ballet Nacional de España has also invited choreographer Marcos Morau to perform a work titled "AFANADOR," and there is also active exchange with artists from other genres such as dance, music, and visual arts.
Florencia OZ' "ANTIPODAS" is one of the most outstanding flamenco contemporary works.
Flamenco dancer Florencia OZ and cellist and singer Isidora O'Ryan are twin sisters. Although it is a minimalist work featuring only the two twin sisters, it is a flamenco work with a unique flavor that goes far beyond the realm of a so-called "collaboration.
Flamenco dancer and choreographer Florencia OZ presented her first solo work, ANTIPODAS, at the Jerez Flamenco Festival in 2021, where it won the festival's Newcomer Award. Since then, the piece has been performed in many countries, including the most important flamenco event, the "Bienal de Sevilla," and has made a strong impression on Florencia OZ. Four years after its premiere, the play continues to attract offers from all over the world.
The work, which she performed alone with her twin sister Isidora O'Ryan (cellist and singer), depicts the coexistence of two women who are related to each other on stage. The work depicts the coexistence of two women in a relationship on stage. Inspired by the mythological concept of "duality," which has been mentioned many times since Romanticism, the work depicts the journey of a being who was once one, to "become himself" of his own volition, confronting his own duality and identity.
The title "ANTIPODAS" means antipodal (opposite side of the earth). The title can be interpreted in a variety of ways, and we have chosen not to annotate it, but to present it as it is in the original language.
Florencia OZ was born in Chile, South America. She is one of the most successful foreign flamenco artists in Spain.
She has worked with the Ballet flamenco de Andalucia and many other renowned dancers' companies and has steadily built her career, winning the prestigious Cordoba Flamenco Competition in 2019.
When she finally had the opportunity to present a solo work in 2021, she had a strong desire to create a work just for her and her twin sister Isidora O'Ryan.
Florencia had no intention of making this work a personal story. However, as it turned out, childhood memories and something spontaneous from her relationship with Isidora had an unintended influence on the work. Perhaps this is why there is a sense of playfulness and simple nostalgia in "ANTIPODAS.
Isidora, a musician, also has a background in Butoh, and her natural body language is in perfect harmony with Florencia's sharp flamenco.
Contemporary, minimalist, harmonious, symmetrical, graceful, and balanced, this work has also attracted attention for its stunning visual beauty. However, this is not a lavishly decorated production. The stage set is very simple, and the colors are pale earth tones, almost monotone. The lighting is also subdued, and there is no showy presentation. However, one can sense that a delicate sense of beauty permeates every corner of the stage. This unique aesthetic sense is also the charm of the dancer Florencia OZ.
This time, the performance will be held in the intimate setting of the Suginami Koukaidou Recital Hall. You will be able to enjoy this gem of a flamenco piece, which is being performed for the first time in Asia, from a distance where you can even hear the sound of the costumes rubbing against each other.
