The value of craftsmanship
For the first time, we produced three types of custom-made Shigaraki-ware pots for A-BONSAI(R).
Shigaraki ware, one of the six oldest kilns in Japan, is a traditional pottery with a history of more than 1,000 years centered in Shigaraki Town, Koka City, Shiga Prefecture. Its origins can be traced back to the Heian period (794-1192), and during the Kamakura and Muromachi periods (1333-1573), many daily-use ceramics such as jars, pots, and mortars were produced.
The greatest appeal of Shigaraki ware is the "taste of the clay" and the "scenery created by the accidental flames. The simple texture of the coarse clay, the beautiful flow of natural glaze produced by firing in a wood-fired kiln, and the unique burnt and bead-glazed expressions created by the fire and ashes all contribute to the creation of one-of-a-kind pieces that are never identical.
The simplicity and warmth of the texture is deeply connected to the spirit of "wabi and sabi," which Japanese people have cherished since ancient times. When you hold a piece in your hand, you can quietly feel its weight and the strength of the clay, and it has a mysterious charm that calms the hearts of those who see it.
Today, while preserving the tradition, many new works of art are being created that incorporate new sensibilities. By using Shigaraki ware as a bonsai pot, nature and the vessel resonate with each other, creating a deeper story and harmony within a single pot.
We have worked with Shigaraki craftsmen to create a custom-made pot. By layering the "microcosm" of bonsai on Shigaraki ware, which combines a thousand years of history with a modern aesthetic, the work speaks more deeply to the viewer's heart.
The A-BONSAI(R) series of crafted bonsai are modeled after the pine tree, a representative of Japanese bonsai, and are maintenance-free and do not wither like a live bonsai tree. You can enjoy the brilliance of the special pine foliage and traditional scenery of a well cared for bonsai at any time, with no maintenance required.
A-BONSAI is designed by Kajiwara, President of J-Wa International, who has experience in training live tree bonsai, and each A-BONSAI is handmade in Japan by Japanese craftsmen. Because it is handmade, strictly speaking, no two are the same in the world. Furthermore, since no soil is used, the bonsai can be decorated hygienically without insect infestation, etc. Visitors can enjoy an affluent life with a sustainable bonsai in the SDGs era.
A-BONSAI(R) is a craft bonsai modeled after the pine tree. The pine tree has been a symbol of longevity in Japan since ancient times. This is due to the fact that the pine tree is considered a symbol of "life" because its leaves shine green all year round. The pine tree is considered the most auspicious plant in Japan, as it is called "Matsu, Take, Ume.
Blog: Why we are interested in "Pine" bonsai?
A-BONSAI(R) follows the Edo Bonsai style established in the Edo period (1603-1868). In the early Edo period, trees suitable for bonsai growing in the mountains in a harsh natural environment were collected and planted in pots as bonsai. In the modern age, A-BONSAI(R) has become a representation of the appearance of pine trees growing in the harsh natural environment of the Edo period. The trunk is not shaped with a wire as in modern bonsai, but is created as a natural form that is solely adapted to the pot.
[Blog: Why we are concerned about "Edo Bonsai"?
A-BONSAI(R) has been created to represent the essence of bonsai, the natural form on the pot. Bonsai has traditional manners, and by following the manners, it becomes a more prestigious object of appreciation.

It is no exaggeration to say that A-BONSAI(R) is the only handmade crafted bonsai in the world that is in the spirit of Zen and follows the definition and manner of bonsai.

It is not widely known that Shinto, Japan's original religion, used handmade flowers and trees, not fresh plants, as ornaments for the gods. One example is the "Zoka Junibei" decoration at Ishimizu Hachiman Shrine, which began in the Muromachi period (1336-1573). The "Twelve Vases of Artificial Flowers" is an ornament consisting of 12 vases (jars) filled with artificial flowers (artificially created flowers and plants) for use as offerings before the gods. The "Twelve Vases of Artificial Flowers" were an important decoration used in the Shinto ritual called the Iwashimizu Festival. These artifacts, created with the utmost care and devotion, were considered to be objects of worship to the most important things in the world since ancient times.
In Shinto, "purity" is the most important concept. It was believed that the withering of natural flowers could lead to "defilement. Therefore, non-withering artificial flowers were a means of maintaining sanctity. Artificial flowers also played the role of fixing and passing on the "form" and meaning of rituals through the repeated use of specific shapes and colors.
A-BONSAI(R) is similar to the "Twelve Vases of Artificial Flowers," as each piece is made from scratch by Japanese craftsmen who put their hearts and souls into their work.

With the global bonsai boom, thefts of rare bonsai have been occurring in many places. In some cases, especially high-value live tree bonsai are sold at high prices as one-of-a-kind pieces, and theft is a serious problem.
As a plant, a live tree bonsai requires photosynthesis by sunlight, and in many cases, it must be managed outdoors. This characteristic is a risk factor for security during the night and in the absence of the owner.
Craft bonsai, on the other hand, do not require watering or sunlight and can be displayed indoors and locked at all times, which is a great advantage.
A-BONSAI(R) is also being offered to the following institutions and individuals.
Those who wish to entertain their customers with a maintenance-free, seasonally auspicious pine bonsai (restaurants, hotels and inns, nursing homes, etc.).
Those who want to decorate bonsai as a supporting role for meals (e.g., restaurants that are concerned about hygiene).
Those who want to create a Japanese atmosphere (Japanese sweets stores, Japanese tableware shops, etc.)
Those who want to decorate their rooms with fresh bonsai trees but have problems with cost and maintenance.
Those who want to give a gift of good luck to their loved ones.
Those who want to enrich their lives by decorating their rooms with lucky ornaments.
Those who like bonsai and want to decorate it, but are worried that it will die (those who have had bonsai die).
