Asahikawa aims to be the "Music Capital of the North" - Further development of citizens' music culture

Asahikawa, located in the center of Hokkaido, is known for its rich natural environment and cultural activities. Asahikawa has a long history as a "City of Music," and many of its citizens are familiar with all genres of music, including brass bands, classical music, choral music, pop, rock, and jazz.

In recent years, however, opportunities for local musical activities and events have been on the decline, due in part to the declining population and the Corona disaster.

Therefore, the Asahikawa Music Week Executive Committee launched "Asahikawa Music Week" in 2023, aiming to make Asahikawa "the music capital of the north, where music can be heard from every corner of the city" and to bring back music events in the city where each citizen can play a leading role.

AMW Street Live

Various genres of music will be performed, including brass band, orchestra, chorus, jazz, rock, pop, and hip-hop. All performers are open to the public and all music lovers, both professional and amateur, are welcome to participate.

In addition, the "BLACK BOTTOM BRASS BAND" from Toyonaka City, Osaka Prefecture, which has a friendship city agreement with Asahikawa, will make a guest appearance. The band will perform in collaboration with Asahikawa-based bands.

Formed in 1993 by students of Osaka College of Music (Toyonaka City, Osaka Prefecture). As a New Orleans-style jazz band, they have been actively touring throughout Japan and collaborating with artists from a wide range of genres. In recent years, the band has been active in outreach activities at elementary and junior high schools as a registered artist with the Japan Foundation for Regional Art-Activities.

Asahikawa Chorus Festival

The Asahikawa Chorus Federation also holds the Asahikawa Chorus Festival. Local choral groups will perform their beautiful harmonies in the main hall of the Asahikawa Civic Cultural Hall.

Station Live

Acoustic-only live performances will be held at the "Asahikawa Animal Piano" located on the east concourse of JR Asahikawa Station. Please enjoy the melodies played by the "Station Piano," which has become a hot topic throughout Japan in recent years.

A New Step in Community Development through Music

The purpose of this event is to further develop the musical activities that Asahikawa citizens are familiar with on a daily basis, and to realize a vision of a city where music can be heard everywhere in the city. By rediscovering the charm of the region through music and creating opportunities for exchange that transcends generations and genres, the event will be a step forward in the development of a new Asahikawa city.
