Background of the project
Tokiwa Jizo is a standing statue of Jizo Bosatsu (Jizo Bodhisattva) that Minamoto no Yoshitsune's mother, Tokiwa Gozen, prayed for safe delivery during her pregnancy in the late Heian period (794-1185). This single image of the Buddha represents the earnest prayer of a mother tossed about in a turbulent world and her deep love for her unborn child. Having quietly watched over people for nearly 1,000 years, Tokiwa Jizo is more than an object of faith; it is a precious presence that tells the most dramatic story of a mother and child in Japanese history. We have started this project to restore Tokiwa Jizo, which has been damaged over the years, in June of this year in order to pass its appearance on to future generations.
We are also holding a special open house until May 25 to let the public know about the restoration project. For details, please refer to the following URL.
