(Marugame City, Kagawa Prefecture; Representative Director: Shinobu Aihara), under the design supervision of WASHIKUDO Co. Nagi" is now open.
Nagi" is an accommodation facility renovated from a townhouse built along Onari-kaido Road.
Nagi" is a townhouse in the town of Monzenmachi, where you can feel calmness in your heart.
Onari Kaido Road in Foshozan prospered as the town in front of Honenji Temple. Even today, many historical buildings such as merchant houses and town houses from the Edo period still remain, and the townscape of yesteryear can be seen in the present.
Mr. Aihara, the innkeeper of "Nagi", was previously involved in the Machigurumi Ryokan, and was attracted to this old machiya architecture from that time. This time, Mr. Aihara decided to acquire the building and revitalize it as an accommodation facility through conservation, repair, and maintenance.
Nagi" means that the wind stops blowing and the waves become calm. The entire facility was designed and creatively directed by Shiwakudo, based in Mitoyo City, Kagawa Prefecture, who has been involved in projects for the conservation, repair, and utilization of cultural properties throughout Japan. The facility was developed with the hope that guests will "regain a calm mind" through their stay at this place in today's hectic society.
The gateway to the town of Monzenmachi
Nagi" is located at the gateway to Monzenmachi. It is located on the south side of Aoi-do, a long-established confectionery store established in 1877, facing the street.
At the entrance, the elegant "de-goshi" (door frame) of a machiya (townhouse) welcomes you. Passing through the eaves, you will find a street earthen floor with a dignified choji. A pleasant breeze flows from outside through the room to the courtyard.
Located at the entrance of Monzenmachi
Aji Glass" meets the moon
As you walk through the calm and quiet brightness of the Dori Doma, you will encounter the new moon, and in the mirror you will see a half moon in the process of filling up.
The work of the month is "Aji Glass," a glass work created by glass artist Rie Sugiyama, who lives in Kagawa Prefecture. Aji Glass" is made by melting Aji Stone, a granite produced in Kagawa, into glass.
*New moon type will be installed in the future.
●Sanuki Wooden Oke Bath to Brew Your Trip
The private baths, in which "wooden tubs made of hinoki (Japanese cypress)" are placed, are the best way to relax from the fatigue of traveling. This one was assembled by the team of the "Wooden Barrel Artisan Revival Project," which is working to increase the number of wooden barrels and wooden barrel artisans, as well as to increase the value and demand for wooden-barrel brewed products in the world, using the techniques of wooden barrel making.

The inner room facing the courtyard where travelers gather for breakfast.
Guests gather in the Okunoma, the most prestigious room, which has an alcove and a shoin-style drawing room and overlooks the courtyard to the east.
In the morning, guests can enjoy the beauty of the morning sun shining through the east-facing garden and enjoy their meals while admiring the natural surroundings.
The garden was revitalized by HIFUMI, a Takamatsu-based company that creates a new planting culture based on the beautiful nature created by the local community.
While paying respect to the existing courtyard, the placement and height of the lanterns and stepping stones were adjusted, the bamboo fence was restored, the trees were groomed, and shrubby undergrowth was planted, taking into consideration the line of sight from the rooms and the overall balance of the garden. The pond was also restored, and the garden was revitalized by dropping water to create a soothing sound of water.

Machiya-do" guest rooms that make the most of the Taisho Period originality.
On the second floor, there are three guest rooms with different personalities that make the most of the detailed design of the Taisho period townhouse architecture. There are two Japanese-style rooms that can accommodate up to three people, and a bunk bed room that can be used as a bed unit. Each partition is reversible so that it can be returned to its original state in the event of future renovations, and the structure is designed to preserve the historic building.
The "nodoka" room overlooks the courtyard, which is a source of pride.
Comfortable lodging in a historic building
In 2020, the Law for the Protection of Cultural Properties will be revised to encourage the active use of historical buildings in local communities. On the other hand, accommodation facilities utilizing cultural asset buildings have been regarded as "hot and cold can't be helped," but with the acceptance of inbound travelers, "comfortable environment" is being questioned.
In the renovation of "Nagi", Shiwakudo, which has been involved in the preservation and utilization of historical buildings including cultural asset buildings, has been working to improve the heat insulation, airtightness, and earthquake resistance of the building while maintaining the atmosphere and spatial structure of the historical townhouse building facing the highway, in order to realize "a comfortable lodging environment in an old private house inn". We are trying to realize a "comfortable lodging environment in an old private house inn.
