History of the Yamaman Eucalyptus Hill Line
The Yamaman Eucalyptus Hill Line was started by the former Electric Railway Department (now the Public Transportation Department) after receiving a railroad business license for the first time in the postwar period as a railroad business operated by a private company, in order to realize a lifestyle where all residences are within a 10-minute walk from the nearest station in Eucalyptus Hill, where Yamaman is developing the line. Eucalyptus Hill has been committed to Transit Oriented Development (TOD) since its development began in 1971, and is being developed as a town where people can live on foot, with public transportation at the center. The Yamaman Eucalyptus Hill Line, which circles the center of the 250-hectare Eucalyptus Hill New Town in the shape of a tennis racket, has become a symbol of Eucalyptus Hill as an environmentally friendly and sustainable new transportation system that produces no noise, vibration, or exhaust gas since its operation.
Japan's first face recognition boarding system
Eucalyptus PASS (Face Recognition Boarding System), the first full-scale introduction of this system in Japan, will be implemented on June 15, 2024, combining the face recognition technology provided by Panasonic Connect Co. (headquartered in Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Yasuyuki Higuchi) and Jorudan's payment and ticket management system "JorudanStyle Point&Pass" to perform contactless, non-face-to-face identification, ticket confirmation and boarding management, enabling seamless boarding with a single user's face.
By changing the means of payment for public transportation in the region from current tickets and magnetic tickets to cashless payment with facial recognition, we will improve the convenience of public transportation. In conjunction with the introduction of Eucalyptus PASS, ticket vending machines that previously issued magnetic tickets have been converted to QR code ticket vending machines. This allows users who are not registered for cashless payment by facial recognition to use QR code tickets.
Eucalyptus PASS (Face Recognition Boarding System) Initiatives to Date
In order to realize an efficient and favorable transportation environment that meets the needs of users, Yamaman and JORDAN started a demonstration experiment of the system using face recognition boarding on the Yamaman Community Bus (Koara Bus) on May 10, 2021, and added the service on the Yamaman Eucalyptus Hill Route on September 15, 2021, and will continue the experiment until March 2023. The experiment was conducted until March 2023 to demonstrate the development of a transportation environment (multi-modal transportation system) through the coordination of multiple transportation systems.
In the experiment, facial recognition terminals were installed at each station on the Yamaman-Eucalyptus Hill Line and in each Koara Bus vehicle to immediately confirm the identity of passersby and information on the payment and ticket management system, and to study and establish the convenience and practicality of the service for users and how it can be used as a city service.
