Single mothers are suffering from low income due to successive price hikes.

The price of goods is said to be twice as high as last year's as of April 2023 due to a series of price hikes, and single mothers can be said to be the representative group that will be particularly affected by these price hikes. Single mothers are more likely to be in non-regular employment, and even a small increase in prices will affect their lives. According to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare's "National Survey of Single-parent Households," there were 1,419,000 single-parent households in 2016. Of these, 1,232,000 were "single-mother households. The most common reason for becoming a single-mother household was "separation" (521,263 households). The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare's "2021 National Survey of Single-parent Households" provides a glimpse into the severity of these households' finances.

According to the survey results, in 2020, the average annual income of single mothers (average household size, 3.18 persons) was 2.72 million yen from their own income alone, and 2.36 million yen from their employer's income (employment income). The median income from work was 2 million yen. This means that a single mother's monthly income is 166,000 yen, or about 130,000 yen as take-home pay, which is right in the middle of the income range for single mothers.

What is the "Single Mothers Support Group"?

It is an association that promotes various "mutual help" initiatives for single mothers throughout Japan.

(Membership fee: 330 yen for 20s, 550 yen for 30s, 880 yen for 40s, and 1320 yen for 50s)

The association will start by providing a discount site for purchase of daily consumable goods and a guarantee service for unemployment insurance, and then redistribute the membership fee to create an environment that makes life easier for single mothers in terms of "work, housing, food, and childcare" by offering various congratulatory money for childbirth and higher education, emergency loans, and other joint counseling services for the members. We aim to create an environment that is easy for single mothers to live in, including "work, housing, food, and child-rearing.
