Background of Development
In Chiba Prefecture, crops and residents are being damaged by wild boars, kyongs, and other animal damage. Until now, exterminated individuals that have been discarded have been sold as gibier, and measures have been taken to create a community where both animals and people can live comfortably together. On the other hand, the skins have become industrial waste in the process of butchering. Therefore, in 2022, we began producing wild animal leather products that make use of the hides, with the new goal of zero waste. However, in May 2024, the facility where the raw hides were stored became unusable. In order to sustainably utilize the hides in the future, we urgently needed to secure a freezer for storing raw hides and a workshop, so we launched a crowdfunding campaign.
Features
Leather that can be returned to the soil with little environmental impact
The leather is processed using a method that has acquired the Oeko-Tex Standard 100, the world's top level certification for safe textile products, which minimizes the environmental impact of the manufacturing process and allows the leather to be returned to the soil.
*"Silk of leather" utilizing kyong, a species that breeds in large numbers in Chiba Prefecture.
Originally from China and Taiwan, the "Kyon," a small deer about the size of a Shiba dog, is an invasive alien species that escaped from a facility in Chiba Prefecture about 30 years ago and is now proliferating in large numbers. Its leaping ability and small size make it difficult to defend rice paddies, and it has caused a lot of damage to foliage and seedlings. Its leather has fibers so fine that they cannot be reproduced with man-made fibers, giving it an exquisite feel that can be described as the "silk of leather.
*Kyon chamois cloth, a natural super cloth
Kyon leather fibers are said to be less than 1/100,000th the size of a hair, and can remove fine dust and dirt without damaging the item being cleaned. It is a natural super cloth that also contains plenty of oil, which gives polished items a glossy shine. It can also be used for beauty wash.
