What is the Tokyo Classics Association and the Great Bidding Session for the Exhibition of Classical Books?
The Tokyo Classical Society is operated by 27 secondhand bookstores that mainly specialize in classical works within the Tokyo Antiquarian Book Association (approximately 600 used bookstore members). We celebrated our 110th anniversary in 2023. Every week, we operate a market at the Tokyo Antiquarian Book Hall where hundreds of classic Japanese and Chinese books from all over the country are traded.
Normally, this market is limited to second-hand book association dealers, but once a year, at the "Classic Books Exhibition and Auction," the general public can actually touch and view the items at the venue and request bids from dealers. If you are considering purchasing, please contact the venue reception. We will consult with you based on your budget. Please note that when you make a successful bid for an ordered item, we will charge a small fee in addition to the successful bid price.
In accordance with the regulations of the Japan Antiquarian Booksellers' Association, this auction will be held on behalf of antiquarian book dealers.
Sold prices will not be disclosed.
This year's featured items
There are items related to taiga dramas, such as ``Kyougetsubo,'' a colored picture book of Kyoka poetry published by Juzaburo Tsutaya, the main character of next year's taiga drama, and ``The Tale of Genji Karuta'' from this year's.
In addition to the imperial edict sent by Emperor Meiji to Tomomi Iwakura, there will also be valuable items on display that you can enjoy just by looking at them, including Utagawa Hiroshige's masterpiece ``Meisho Edo Hyakkei - Kameido Umeyashiki.''
