Background

While there has been a trend in recent years for people to seek out water that is renowned for its health benefits and is good for the body, the effects of such water have not been fully verified, and there is a lack of scientific evidence. Consumers in the cosmetics industry also tend to use evidence as an indicator for product selection, so we commissioned a study to examine the effects on the skin of natural carbonated silica water from Yufu City, Oita Prefecture, which is the base material for our skincare products, in the hope that it would help clarify some of the evidence for "good-for-you water.

■Research Results

(1) In a protective action experiment against hydrogen peroxide-induced cytotoxicity, naturally carbonated silica water increased the survival rate of human fibroblasts, and the same water with active treatment increased the survival rate of human epidermal keratinocytes.

(2) Natural carbonate-silica water significantly increased mitochondrial respiratory activity in human fibroblastsActivity-treated water with the same water showed a trend toward increased mitochondrial respiratory activity in human epidermal keratinocytes, and mitochondrial respiratory activity in human fibroblasts was significantly increased.

(3) In cell proliferation experiments of human fibroblasts and epidermal keratinocytes, natural carbonated silica water significantly increased epidermal keratinocytes and human fibroblasts, and the same water treated with activity also showed a tendency to increase human epidermal keratinocytes and human fibroblasts.
