Komatsu Ltd. (Head Office: Higashiosaka City, Osaka; President: Satoshi Komatsu) and Intelligent Mechanisms Laboratory, Department of Intelligent Information Engineering, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Doshisha University (Professor: Masahiro Okuda) have jointly developed the wallpaper AI identification application "KABEPITA," which incorporates an "automatic texture identification program," and has recently received the Good The application, "KABEPITA," which is equipped with an automatic texture identification program, was awarded the Good Design Award for 2024 (sponsored by the Japan Institute of Design Promotion).
In addition, "KABEPITA" will be exhibited at the GOOD DESIGN EXHIBITION 2024, an event to be held at Tokyo Midtown in Roppongi, Tokyo, from November 1, 2024 (Friday).
Under the theme of "Design with Courage and Organic", Komatsu Ltd. took on the challenge of "courage" and co-created "organic" new values with Doshisha University. We will continue to make further efforts to create an innovative future for the industry, as well as to eliminate the tedious work involved with the use of Kabe Pita.
Name: "KABEPITA," an application that identifies wallpaper part numbers by AI
Key design points
1. the AI application reduces work hours of construction workers who have part number identification issues. Helping to reform the way of working by improving labor efficiency. 2.
(2) Developed a new identification technology "automatic texture identification program" focusing on material texture through industry-academia collaboration and applied for a patent.
Contribution to the SDGs by reducing CO2 emissions through reduced vehicle travel and reusing waste materials through accurate identification
Reason/Background of ■Design
In the interior design and construction industry, identification of part numbers of installed construction materials has been a longstanding issue. When a specification sheet was lost, a large number of catalogs had to be brought to the job site, and the manual identification process was inefficient and labor-intensive with many errors, and had long been neglected due to the lack of a technical solution.
Komatsu Komatsu, President of Komatsu Ltd., believed that IT and DX were needed to improve efficiency, and in cooperation with Doshisha University and Professor Okuda, completed the KABEPITA by establishing a new identification technology that differed from the conventional method. It brings many benefits to labor improvement and SDGs, such as reduction of working hours, CO2 emission reduction, and reuse of waste materials. This technology is a design that will change many futures.
■How the design was realized and its results
In order to solve the problem of identifying household wallpaper, which is difficult even for knowledgeable people, we developed a highly accurate image identification program in collaboration with Professor Okuda of the Intelligent Mechanism Laboratory, Department of Intelligent Information Engineering, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Doshisha University, which led to the patent application. This system, which identifies not only color and shape, but also material texture, has achieved an identification accuracy of over 90% and an identification time of only a few seconds. Furthermore, aiming for an operation screen for contractors, consumers, and all ages, we went through a trial and error process to realize easy operation with highly visible buttons, and released "KABEPITA," an application that incorporates the patented technology. With its memo and image transfer functions, Kabepita frees users from various constraints such as labor, time, distance, travel, and cost.
