The Data Recovery Association of Japan (DRAJ; located in Minato-ku, Tokyo; Chairman: Yasuya Uraguchi) has released statistical data on the data recovery industry and market size for 2023 (January to December).

As a result of the survey, the number of requests for hard disk drive (HDD) and solid state drive (SSD) recovery for the entire industry in 2023 is estimated to be 73,400 units (55,200 PCs, 15,400 external devices, and 2,800 servers), a decrease from the previous year.

PC sales to individuals were sluggish due to the transition to the new Corona 5, while corporate customers saw demand for mid- to high-end products due to changes in work styles, but overall PC sales were on a downtrend for the third consecutive year.

As for external storage, although the shift from HDDs to SSDs is further progressing, the total sales volume is decreasing while the recovery request rate remains constant, affected by the decline in sales of mother machines for PCs, etc.

As for servers, the shift from on-premise to cloud computing is further accelerating, and although the sales volume is decreasing, damage caused by ransomware is still continuing, and since it affects large volumes of data, the damage is becoming large-scale. The number of consultation requests for this type of recovery is also on the rise, and the Association will continue to address this issue.

In the data recovery industry and market as a whole, the number of recovery requests from both individuals and corporations is on a slight downward trend, and in recent years, even if data recovery work is supported by the encryption function based on the security specifications of PCs compatible with Windows 11, there are notable cases where decryption cannot be performed due to encryption functions that users are unaware of. The Association will provide support for this in October of next year. In preparation for Windows 10, which will no longer be supported next October, the Association recommends that when upgrading to Windows 11 or purchasing a new PC equipped with Windows 11, users should be sure to register a Microsoft account and back up the BitLocker recovery key. In addition, the company provides consultation on data recovery services.

In addition, as the Association is still receiving consultations on problems related to data recovery services, it released "Guidelines for Data Recovery Services" and "Vendor Selection Check Sheet in Case of Data Damage" last year as part of its efforts to further strengthen its activities in the public interest. Furthermore, this year, when the Association's website was redesigned, it provided "Information to assist those who have encountered problems with data recovery services to solve their problems. Calling the tactics of malicious vendors who take advantage of emergencies in business and daily life "Rescue Business", we decided to publish common solicitation tactics as "Rescue Business for Data Recovery Services" from time to time.
