Urawa University (located in Saitama City, Saitama Prefecture), Faculty of Sociology, Department of General Welfare, Health and Sports Course, will hold the open lecture "Health Exercise Class 2024" from September 30 (Monday) to November 11 (Monday), 2024 and from November 18 (Monday) to December 23 (Monday), 2024 (6 sessions per term).

What is "Health Exercise Class"?

The "Health Exercise Class" is an open lecture series that has been held annually by the university since 2014.

In this class, third-year students enrolled in the Health and Sports course use the knowledge and skills they have acquired in class to create a "nursing care prevention program. We invite all senior citizens living in the community to participate in this program, which will help "prevent nursing care" and "promote the health of the elderly," as well as "promote community interaction.

Background of the event

As attention is focused on "extending healthy life expectancy," it is the wish not only of those concerned but also of society as a whole that the elderly can live happily and energetically indefinitely. In response to the great challenge of maintaining the current situation in which more than 80% of the elderly are in good health and preventing them from requiring nursing care, the University has established the "Health and Sports Course" in the Department of Welfare, where students specialize in sports and health promotion.

The theme of the "Health and Sports Course" is "prevention of nursing care" and "health promotion for the elderly," and as a research institute, we started the event in 2014 to "promote regional exchange" in order to actively return a part of our achievements to the local community.

Features

Students who have studied the basics of health promotion will provide explanations and assistance for preparatory and organizational exercises, recreational activities to promote interaction among participants, and training using machines.

Examples of "Health Exercise Class 2023

(1) Preparatory exercise and interaction program

Students planned and conducted preparatory exercises to prevent injuries and increase the effectiveness of exercise, as well as programs to promote interaction among participants and between participants and staff.

(2) Resistance training

Using the university's training room, we conducted a machine training program that could be safely conducted even by the elderly. Students provided support and instruction on how to use the machines.

(3) Exercises

Stretching and massaging were performed to loosen used muscles and prevent fatigue and soreness. This was also thought up and practiced by the students.
