Kinki Vision Support (Location: Nishinomiya City, Hyogo Prefecture, Representative: Yukiyo Takeda) has launched a crowdfunding campaign on CAMPFIRE titled "Tandem Bicycle Team for the Visually Impaired to Circle Taiwan! We want to expand the circle of people enjoying together! on CAMPFIRE on September 7, 2024 (Sat) and will continue until October 13 (Sun), 2024 (Sun).

About this project

Tandem bicycles pedaled by two people are twice as powerful and fun! This year, the visually impaired team from Japan and Taiwan will be touring 1,000 km around Taiwan on World Eye Protection Day! Please join us in thanking the pilots who ride with us as our eyes, expanding the circle of volunteers, and supporting a tomorrow where people can enjoy themselves even if they can no longer see!

What we want to achieve with this project

In a tandem bicycle, a "pilot" rides in the front and a "stoker" in the rear controls the handlebars, while the "stoker" in the rear pours fuel. It is a sport that people with disabilities can enjoy together by matching their breath and power with the pilot.

We are grateful to the pilots who support our challenge with us, and we want to convey the appeal of tandem bicycles to more people and create opportunities to expand their lives through bicycling. We would like to expand our circle of support to build a society where people with disabilities and able-bodied people can enjoy together.

■Background of the launch

It may seem difficult for the visually impaired to enjoy cycling, but by using a tandem bicycle, the visually impaired can feel the wind and enjoy the scenery in the same way as able-bodied people.

Following the lifting of the ban on riding tandem bicycles on public roads across Japan last year, we have received many inquiries from visually impaired people who want to ride a bicycle while feeling the wind again, and where and how they can do so. However, a major challenge to this new possibility is the overwhelming shortage of pilots.

On the other hand, some people say, "I want to become a pilot, but I am not sure if I can drive safely," or "There is no place where I can rent a tandem bicycle. We believe that holding the pilot experience event is a way to expand the base of pilots and create an environment that will lead to the future, so that more visually impaired people will be able to experience tandem bicycles.

How the support money will be used

We plan to use the funds raised for the following purposes

Personnel expenses

Publicity and advertising expenses

Return stocking costs

Cost of holding at least 8 pilot experience events (bicycle rental, transportation, etc.)

●For volunteer pilots from Japan (4 people) as part of the event participation expenses

About the organizer, Yukiyo Takeda (for details, please refer to the URL at the bottom of the release)

At the age of 12, she was diagnosed with a progressive intractable disease that could lead to blindness in the future.

In her late 30s, she was diagnosed as visually impaired level 2, and is now in the final stages of "seeing".

While working as a freelance trainer for companies and visually impaired people, she is also working on projects to change society, such as cooperation between medical care and welfare, and community development.

Her motto is "Be sparkling yourself even if you can no longer see sparkles!
