The domestic and international success of "Ring" triggered a Japanese horror boom from the 1990s to the early 2000s, and the term "Japanese horror" or "J-horror" for short became established.
As the starting point of this boom, director Norio Tsuruta's OV works, such as the "Really Scary Stories" series, attracted much attention, and fans came to refer to him as the "father of J-horror.
This special screening will feature some of Tsuruta's best-known works, from his origins to his latest films.
The program includes an 8mm competition featuring three of his 8mm films from his student days in original footage, a collection of short stories featuring three self-recommended short films, three early works from his OV "Really Scary Stories," which became his breakout film, his latest film "The Shiver Link," which he was invited to China to shoot, and a live-action film co-produced with Hong Kong based on a manga by horror comic master Ito Junji. The ambitious "Scarecrow Kakashi," a live-action co-production with Hong Kong, and 11 short, medium and feature films will be screened at one time.
On the final day, "Scarecrow Kakashi" will be screened as a special event, with Director Norio Tsuruta and Professor Junji Ito as guests for a talk by the two great horror masters.
The talk will be followed by an autograph session, photo session, and reception (additional fee required).
Please come and enjoy this last summer event from Cinema Novecento, even if you are not a horror fan!
