Kyoto's Maiko and Jazz Band with Koto to Perform Together Maiko and Jazz Night" to be held on July 15 during the Gion Festival Yoiyama

Kyoto Bunka NFT LLC, a company that promotes the splendor of Kyoto's traditional Hanamachi culture both in Japan and abroad, will hold "Jazz Night with Maiko" on July 15, 2024 (Monday, national holiday), during the Gion Festival Yoiyama.

Jazz Night with Maiko

A jazz band consisting of vocalists, pianists, saxophonists, and koto players will perform and sing songs such as "Gion Kouta," a jazz arrangement of the popular Edo period song "Hatauta" and the popular Meiji period song "Kouta" for this evening, and the maiko will dance to them.

The maiko will perform and sing, and the audience from overseas will be able to enjoy the classical Japanese performing arts.

Social Issues Surrounding Kyoto

Lack of key players to carry on traditional culture

　The number of geiko and maiko has been decreasing in Kyoto's five traditional flower districts, including Gion Koubu.

　April 2019: 175 geiko and 79 maiko

　April 2024: 155 geiko and 56 maiko

　As you can see, the number of important players is greatly decreasing.

There is little evening entertainment.

The first event to be unveiled

Songbird TAeKO (Taeko Fukao), a jazz singer with over 20 years of performance experience in New York, will perform.

As a collaboration of traditional culture and jazz, a jazz performance using koto will be given.

Maiko will perform a dance to the music of the jazz band led by Ms. TAeKO. Please enjoy Japanese kaiseki cuisine that will delight your senses as you watch the maiko perform their dances. Those who do not like alcohol are also welcome. During the meal, maiko and jazz band members will visit each table to take two-shot photos and enjoy a happy time together.
