Profile of Master Issho Fujita

Born in Ehime, Japan in 1954.

After graduating from Nada High School and the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Tokyo, he majored in developmental psychology at graduate school.

While a graduate student, he encountered and became deeply devoted to zazen, and at the age of 28, in the middle of his doctoral program, he entered a Zen Buddhist monastery and became a Buddhist monk.

After returning to Japan in 2005, he continued his zazen studies and teaching.

He has been the second director of the Soto Zen International Center for eight years since 2010, and has taught zazen at Starbucks, Facebook, Salesforce, and other major U.S. corporations. Zazen is not bound by traditional Zen forms, but rather a slow relaxation of the body beforehand.

He is well known for his clear and logical teaching, which comes from his experience of teaching Zen in English in the United States.
