What's Happening in the Arctic? A comic book about the Tara's expedition to the North Pole, released on Earth Day, April 22.

Tara Océan Japan (Location: Tokyo, President: Etienne Bourgois), a non-profit organisation dedicated to marine research and ocean conservation, will release the bande dessinée (comic book) "What's happening in the Arctic? -A Scientific Expedition on Climate Change" will be released on April 22, 2024, Earth Day.

■"Is this heat normal in the Arctic?" Bande dessinée (comic book) based on the actual expedition of the Tara Arctic Project, which investigated the effects of global warming in the Arctic.

This book is the Japanese translation of Le Rechauffement Climatique: Mission Tara En Arctique, published in France in May 2021. It is inspired by the real scientific expedition of Tara Arctic (2006-2008).

The story is about four children from around the world who have come together to participate in the Tara's Arctic exploration project. They learn about various issues surrounding the Arctic region from the scientists and crew of the Tara, and see the Arctic Ocean, which has been significantly affected by global warming, and grow up thinking and acting for themselves.

This is a book that you can enjoy reading while learning about what is happening in the Arctic, the frontline of global warming, and that it is not just a problem happening far away and we must take it serious.

Background to the Publication

The year 2023 marks the 20th anniversary of the Tara project. By publishing a bande dessinée on the theme of the Arctic, the starting point of the Tara project, we hope that this milestone will encourage as many readers as possible to consider climate change as their own issue and not someone else's, and to think about measures to combat climate change.
