Aroma Mist Developed from Caring for the House Forest in Toyama, Japan Kainyo Mix" on Sale, Contributing to Preservation of Local Landscape

Mizu to Takumi Ltd. will launch the aroma mist "Kainyo Mix" on April 3, using essential oil extracted from trees in the forests of Kainyo Village as part of its activities to preserve the beautiful rural landscape of Tonami Plain, Toyama Prefecture.

Dispersed Settlement on the Tonami Plain, the largest in Japan, are dotted with houses in rice paddies. The house forests that surround the houses are called "cainyo" in this region, and they protect people's lives from the monsoon 

and snowstorms in winter and the sun in summer. In the past, fallen medicine and branches were used as fuel for boiling and cooking, while cedar and zelkova trees were used as building materials for house additions and various 

household utensils, and sustainable living has been practiced since the Edo 

period.

Cainyo is also a habitat for a variety of living creatures, prevents heat 

islanding, absorbs CO2, and is an excellent eco-system.

■For Conservation and Future Succession

However, due to population decline and lifestyle changes, it is becoming more and more difficult to maintain rice paddies and residential forests year by 

year. Kainyo mix" is an aroma mist developed using essential oil extracted 

from pruned branches during the maintenance of paddy fields and forests in order to contribute to their preservation and future succession.

It is a mix of essential oils of cedar, cypress, asunaro, pine, yew, ibuki, and 

other Kainyo trees of that place and season, and the fragrance changes each time. The scent of the diverse trees in the compound forest is truly a forest 

bath. On a pillowcase, in the car, for a change of pace. Spray it on your pillowcase, in your car, or just to refresh yourself.

A donation of 50 yen is included in the price of this product and will be used to support the dispersed settlement village conservation activities.

■Rakudo-An and Kainyo Care Support Team

This product was created as a result of the Sorai-mura conservation activities at "Rakudo-An", an accommodation facility operated by Mizu to Takumi. The concept of Rakudo-An, which is located in a village in the Tonami Plain, is to allow guests to experience the unique dignity of Toyama, a land where nature and people have worked together to create a unique quality of life, and we consider the landscape of the village, which has been created over the past 500 years, as a symbol of Toyama's "Dodoku(virtue of the earth)" and are working to preserve it and pass it on.

As one such effort, 2% of the room charge is donated for the preservation of the Dipersed Settlement, and we also participate in the activities of the "Kainyo Care Support Team," one of the recipients of support, where volunteers work on the maintenance of the Kainyo. There, we learned that cainyo trees and fallen leaves, once used for cooking and building materials, now have no place to go, and we decided to extract essential oil as one of the new ways to utilize them.

"Kainyo care support team" maintaining a compound forest

With the support of "Aroma Select," a company that extracts essential oils from the resources of Toyama Prefecture's forests, we worked together to develop products.

Kainyo trees vary by season, area, and mansion, and it is difficult to strictly select tree species, so we created a "Kainyo mix" that allows visitors to enjoy a different aroma each time they visit. Like the terroir of wine, no two aromas 

are the same. This time, we will release two types, "2022 + 2023 Autumn" and "2023 Spring," each in a limited edition of 200 bottles.

The products include a donation to the Dispersed Settlement Village Conservation, so you can enjoy the scent of being in the forest while also 

contributing to the nature-positive (nature revival) of the area.

In addition, in cooperation with Tonami City in Toyama Prefecture, we would 

like to increase the production volume and build momentum to protect cainyo in the region by soliciting pruned branches from a wider range of 

Dispersed Settlement Village residents.
