When one moves up the hurdle from accessory making as a hobby, brazing and soldering welding techniques are necessary. Yosemono, a traditional Japanese technique, is a technique that makes full use of these techniques. There are accessory classes that fall under handicrafts and full-scale jewelry classes, but this is the world's first* "Yosemono" class for making accessories (costume jewelry) as a craft.

What is Yosemono?

Yosemono" is a technique of assembling simple individual parts and claws (the base for holding crystals) and welding them together to create jewelry of various shapes and sizes through a process called brazing.

How Yosemono Works

However, with the development of casting, a technology that allows mass production by pouring molten metal, the "Yosemono" technique has been declining.

Is this technology unnecessary? However, it is still necessary in special situations such as stage, dance, and wedding tiaras, because it is easy to express "lightness, delicacy, and brilliance" and is suitable for small-lot production.

The "Yoseko" experience involves arranging the individual parts on a muddy yoseko powder with tweezers.

Yosemono Design School｜Yosemo STUDIO" will open on April 1, 2024 at 2k540, a popular facility where about 50 Japanese brands of craftsmanship gather under the elevated railway between Akihabara and Okachimachi stations on the JR Yamanote Line. Atelier 8's original brand [MASAAKi TAKAHASHi], which operates the "Yosemono Design School," also has a flagship store at this facility, and is considering linking sales and education.

[Introducing the teaching curriculum at Bunka Fashion College's Jewelry Design Department].

Artist Masaaki Takahashi has been teaching students to make costume jewelry based on "Yosemono" techniques in "Metal Work," one of the classes in the Jewelry Design Department of Bunka Fashion College's Fashion Crafts Course since 2018. Based on the curriculum and teaching methods developed over the past five years, we are building a new school.

If you are interested in making jewelry as a hobby, we offer a hobby class where you can create a piece for a project. For those who want to learn the knowledge and techniques of Yosemono, there is a diploma class for designers, craftsmen, artists, and those who want to establish their own brand. We have prepared a variety of curriculum to meet your needs. Hobby and Diploma classes will start in May or later.

In the "Yose" workshop, you can experience the essence of "Yosemono," a new type of workshop where you simply lay out metal parts on a layer of mud called "Yoseko" and design them, leaving the difficult welding work to the craftsman, who will deliver the finished product to your home. Even if you are overseas, we can deliver the product to your home country. If these were real jewelry or precious metals, there would be customs duties, but since the materials are brass or crystal glass, they can be sent to most countries with no customs duties.

The image is similar to something that is painted at a pottery village and the finished product is sent to you at a later date. We believe that this would be a great surprise gift for your mother, friend, or lover as well as a memento of your trip.

There is a mold of the basic design, so all you have to do is arrange the pieces accordingly and wait for the completion!

You can optionally increase the number of stones or choose the color of the crystal glass.

Profile of Masaaki Takahashi

Born in Tokyo in 1972. After studying architecture in Japan, studied under Finnish architect Juha Leiviska. After returning to Japan, he worked at both his own design firm and his parents' accessory manufacturer. 2012, upon learning that there were few successors to the "yosemono" technique, he established the costume jewelry brand [MASAAKi TAKAHASHi] with the aim of raising awareness, spreading, and developing the declining craftsmanship.

He has accumulated a lot of experience in TV and magazine interviews and pop-ups at department stores and commercial facilities, and has been a part-time lecturer at Bunka Fashion College's Fashion Crafts Course Jewelry Design Department since 2018.

From 2019, she has been the official tiara creator for the global Miss Japan contest "Miss Grand Japan" and has also demonstrated her ability in producing works for apparel brands such as Paris Collection.
