Main Visual

Art direction: Suginoshita Design Office

Concept: The key color is the red color of magma, the source of hot springs. Things related to Zao will be singing their lives. We imagined an art festival where everyone can feel the geothermal heat, turn red in the face, and sing their hearts out with their mouths wide open.

Suginoshita Design Office: Established in 2017. They are involved in a wide range of work from general design for advertisements, packages, websites, etc., illustration, branding to product planning. Works include "Branding of Endo's Gesoten (food product)" (winner of the 2023 Good Design Award Gold Prize).

Yamagata Biennale 2024 Highlights

The theme of the festival will be "Singing of Life" in Zao, a place that has healed people's minds and bodies for more than 1,900 years, drawing inspiration from the climate of Zao, including its hot springs, and the artistic culture born in Zao, such as Mokichi Saito. The "Life" and "Songs" of our time will be expressed through four projects: "Hitohi no Uta," "Mountain, Soil, and Tea," "Contemporary Yamagata: The Mountain Sings," and "Summer School. 2.

At the Yamagata Biennale, we invite you to "unwind" your stiffened body and mind with the help of the hot springs, open your senses, "tour" the venue, and listen to the "songs of life" that you will hear there. At the venue, you will be touched by the "words," and at night you will stay in Yamagata, where a deep "sleep" will help you regain your wholeness and "awaken" a new you by sharing the place and time with others and enjoying each other's company.
