BSI Group Japan K.K. (Location: Minatomirai, Nishi-ku, Yokohama; President: Masaki Urushihara; hereinafter "BSI Japan") has certified Yamaguchi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (located in Fukuoka, Fukuoka Prefecture; President: Toyokazu Yamaguchi) for its carbon management initiatives based on PAS 2080:2023 (*1). The certification ceremony will be held on February 1 at BSI's UK headquarters.

Yamaguchi Heavy Industries becomes the first supplier in Asia to receive carbon management certification based on PAS 2080

Recently, global warming, climate change, and other global-scale problems are becoming more serious due to the increase in emissions of greenhouse gases such as oxygen dioxide resulting from our economic activities.

For this reason, the international community has been convening the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) since 1995. At COP26, held in the United Kingdom in 2021, it was clearly stated that efforts should be made to limit the average temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels by around 2030.

In response, countries are accelerating their efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions more than ever.

PAS 2080 provides guidance for construction and infrastructure projects to reduce carbon emissions and minimize environmental impacts. As many countries and regions focus on decarbonizing and greening the construction industry, PAS 2080 requires companies and projects to take a leadership role in reducing CO2 emissions generated throughout the life cycle of the value chain. As a guideline developed with the expectation that construction projects will become more sustainable and environmentally friendly, interest is growing.

BSI Group was involved in the development of PAS 2080 and is developing carbon management certification globally.

- Purpose of the decision to undertake the initiative

According to COP28, Japan needs to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 46% by 2030 compared to the fiscal 2013 level. This means that even small improvements are key to avoiding an escalation of the global environmental crisis caused by climate change.

With various environmental issues being raised not only in Japan but around the world, carbon neutrality in particular has become an urgent issue both in Japan and abroad.

Using the greenhouse gas emissions in the UK by COP28, the most advanced environmental standard in the world, as a reference case, we have set a new KPI of 55% emission reduction by 2030 compared to the 2013 level as our target.

PAS 2080 is an international standard for evaluating sustainability-related factors such as greenhouse gas emission reductions and energy conservation in building projects. We have launched this initiative because we believe that by obtaining this certification, we can fulfill our environmental responsibility and demonstrate our leadership in building a better future.

- Innovations and difficulties in our efforts

As for strengthening industrial collaboration, a building project is a complex process involving many stakeholders, and the cooperation of each stakeholder is essential in order to obtain PAS 2080 certification. It was necessary to strengthen cooperation with various stakeholders to achieve a sustainable building project.

One of the challenges we faced was the need to introduce new technologies and equipment in order to realize an environmentally friendly building project. However, this can entail high costs and technical challenges.

We have responded flexibly to these challenges and have worked to upgrade our technology and equipment in a sustainable manner. The acquisition of PAS 2080 certification is an important step in our efforts to reduce our environmental impact and promote sustainable development.

In the course of receiving certification from BSI, we were able to re-share within our company the importance of green innovation in global environmental issues and review our efforts.

This certification also allows us to take a leadership role in promoting sustainable building projects. By developing building projects that minimize environmental impact by improving energy efficiency, reducing CO2 emissions, and utilizing renewable energy, we can make a social contribution.
