Earth Cardboard Co. (Head office: Ina-machi, Kita-Adachi-gun, Saitama; President: Toshimitsu Okuda), a corrugated cardboard manufacturer and e-commerce site operator, conducted a survey of 1,000 men and women aged 22-60 on their willingness to repurchase products purchased on e-commerce sites based on their experience with crushed or damaged cardboard boxes upon arrival. The survey was conducted among 1,000 men and women aged 22-60 years old.
Survey Topics
Have you ever experienced crushed or damaged cardboard boxes when purchasing products via online shopping?
According to the "2021 White Paper on Information and Communications" (https://www.soumu.go.jp/johotsusintokei/whitepaper/ja/r03/html/nd111110.html) by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the Internet shopping rate in Japan is as high as 73.4%. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications' "White Paper on Information and Communications 2021" ( ), Internet shopping has become an indispensable part of Japanese people's lives.
This time, we conducted a survey of those who have purchased products through online shopping in Japan to determine how much the lack of strength of cardboard boxes affects their willingness to purchase next time.
First, 45.4% of all respondents had experienced crushed or damaged cardboard boxes when they received products purchased through online shopping. This result indicates that nearly half of online shoppers have experienced a lack of durability or strength in cardboard boxes.
■If the cardboard boxes were crushed or damaged, would you be willing to repurchase them?
Next, we asked, "If the cardboard box arrives crushed or damaged, does it have a negative impact on your willingness to purchase the product next time?" the percentage of respondents who answered "yes" exceeded the majority at 51.7%.
This result indicates that the condition of the cardboard boxes has a negative impact on the willingness to purchase the product next time, and is a factor that reduces the repeat-purchase rate.
Impact of Damage
■The difference in the strength of cardboard boxes lies in the "material! Surprisingly unknown durability of corrugated cardboard
So how can we determine whether or not corrugated cardboard is crushable and tear-resistant?
In fact, there are various types of corrugated cardboard, and the strength differs depending on the type of corrugated cardboard.
The strength or tear resistance of corrugated cardboard depends on the material of the corrugated cardboard, called "liner. The liner is the paper used on the front and back sides of the corrugated cardboard between the corrugated cardboard wave top core. Liners are named in descending order of strength, such as "D4," "C120g," "C5 (C160g)," "C6 (C200g)," and so on.
The raw materials of corrugated cardboard are base paper and glue, while the base paper of corrugated cardboard is made from recycled paper and pulp. The alphabet in the liner indicates whether it contains more or less recovered paper, and the number indicates its weight. Generally, the higher the strength, the heavier and the higher the price.
For example, "C5 (C160g)" means that "C" cardboard base paper is used, which weighs 160g per m2. This means that it is nearly 30% stronger than the "C120g" material commonly used in online shopping.
Although thickness (height of tiers) has some effect, 3mm and 4mm corrugated cardboard boxes will have almost the same strength if the materials are the same.

C160g" is Earth Cardboard's optimal solution for corrugated boxes for online shopping
From this survey, we have shown that insufficient strength of corrugated cardboard has a negative impact on the repeat rate of as many as 51.7% of online shoppers.
For EC/D2C businesses, the repeat customer rate is an important factor in sales, and the results of this survey indicate the need to be aware of "cardboard strength" as a measure to improve the repeat customer rate.
Earth Cardboard has a policy that "C160g" is the minimum level of corrugated cardboard used in mail order, and we do not simply offer "C120g" because of its low price. We do not simply provide "C120g" boxes just because they are inexpensive. This is because "C120g" boxes are made of a material that is easily dented, and there is a risk that products will not be properly protected or that customers will be dissatisfied and not repeat purchasers.
For EC/D2C businesses that place importance on repeat purchases, we recommend the use of "C160g" corrugated boxes, which are one rank higher than "C120g.
Earth Cardboard Co., Ltd. offers "C160g" corrugated board at a super special price!
Earth Cardboard Co., Ltd. offers advertised "C160g" corrugated cardboard at a super special price.
Corrugated boxes are usually more expensive the smaller the order lot, but Earth Cardboard's ad-included corrugated boxes are available at a low cost x small lot, which is possible because we are a major corrugated box manufacturer.
Furthermore, we offer a wide range of small to large lot sizes and a variety of types and sizes, allowing us to offer flexible proposals tailored to customer needs.
For EC/D2C businesses struggling with repeat business, we recommend reviewing the strength of the cardboard you are using.
