The circle of support for large-scale disasters that occur every year is rapidly expanding.
On New Year's Day, 2024, the Noto region of Ishikawa Prefecture was hit by a massive earthquake with a maximum intensity of 7 on the Japanese seismic scale. The earthquake caused tremendous damage, including collapsed houses, damage from the tsunami, and large cracks in the roads that prevented fire trucks from getting through, causing fires to spread. As early as the next day, local governments and disaster relief organizations in other prefectures began to support the affected areas. Individuals can support the disaster-stricken areas by donating money until volunteers and relief supplies are ready to arrive, and many reception counters were opened and donations were collected after the earthquake.
Large-scale disasters occur in various regions every year, and it is impossible to know when or where a disaster will strike. The 2018 earthquake in Hokkaido recorded a maximum intensity of 7 on the Japanese scale, resulting in 44 deaths and damage to many homes.
We donate to organizations that share the same disaster preparedness, support, and aspirations.
On Thursday, January 25, 2024, the Comfort Dentures Clinic in Sapporo will hold a presentation ceremony to donate funds to a local disaster relief organization to be used for disaster relief. The amount of the donation is 243,475 yen. The money was collected at a denture memorial service held on October 8, 2011, Denture Day, and from dentures collected at the time of treatment. The donation was made to the Kitanokuni Disaster Support Team, which conducts disaster relief activities in its hometown of Hokkaido, Japan, an organization that also provided support for the 2018 Hokkaido Bold Earthquake and the 2023 Noboribetsu City retaining wall collapse disaster.
As part of our efforts to prepare for disasters and provide dentures immediately in the event of a disaster, we launched a free denture data storage service in 2021 and began nationwide expansion in February 2023. The denture memorial service has been held for the past five years and donations have been made to the Community Chest of Japan. Since late December 2023, we have been in talks with organizations that provide disaster relief and support services, just like our clinic.
The dentures collected during daily treatment were also redeemed for cash.
The money will be donated to a disaster relief organization.
The chairman of the board of directors said, "Dentures are a part of a patient's body because they are used for many years. However, there are many municipalities that do not allow the cremation of dentures containing metal even after death. More and more bereaved families, who cannot dispose of them even if they bring them back home, send them to us from far away along with a polite letter after learning about our memorial service. Since our clinic is committed to delivering dentures promptly in the event of a disaster, we have decided to donate the proceeds from these thoughtful dentures not as a donation but as relief money to disaster relief organizations that provide assistance immediately after a disaster strikes."
We are planning to start a dental bus service this spring. Since the bus is mobile, it can make regular visits to depopulated areas where there is a shortage of dentists and to areas where it is difficult to go to the hospital due to inaccessibility. The bus is also equipped with a solar power generation system, and in the event of a disaster, it will be able to rush to disaster areas and quickly provide dental care, including the fabrication of dentures, in order to prevent disaster-related deaths due to aspiration pneumonia.
