Motivation-Based "Japanese App" to Help Refugees Learning Japanese Demonstration test to begin on February 1, 2024
一般社団法人Transcend-Learning
Transcend-Learning, a general incorporated association that provides job placement support for international students, together with member universities of SUCCESS, a consortium that supports job placement for international students, has developed a Japanese language application for international students who do not have an environment for learning Japanese. Based on the feedback received, the application will be improved over the next four months.
Background of Development
We believe that our entrance strategy has been a great success, as the number of international students has increased due in part to the establishment of English track courses (*1) through the "Support for the Creation of Super Global Universities," a program led by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) to support universities.
We provide support for international students with high Japanese language skills enrolled in Japanese universities, and many of our member universities are also focusing on internationalization.
However, in exchanging opinions with them, we found that there are many issues with exit strategies, such as "students in English track courses are returning to their home countries without finding jobs" and "in addition to the lack of Japanese language learning opportunities, there are no companies willing to hire international students with low Japanese language skills.
We also found that many of the students in the English track courses are "Japanese language learning refugees," who spend most of their time in laboratories and do not have the opportunity to study Japanese sufficiently because they cannot devote time to the classes normally offered by universities. Furthermore, the number of universities, especially national universities, that offer classes in English is increasing, and this problem is expected to become more and more serious.

We have been providing job placement support for students with high Japanese language skills, and have received the highest evaluation from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) among 12 consortiums nationwide (*2). This time, we have decided to start developing a language learning environment for international students with low Japanese language ability, which is necessary before they can find employment.
1 English Track Course
The course does not require a high level of Japanese language proficiency at the time of admission, and classes are conducted in English while the student is enrolled in the program.

Study environment
When we conducted an employment-related survey of international students with high Japanese language proficiency who had received job offers, we asked them about the factors that enabled them to receive job offers. The results showed that a large number of students answered "I had a clear reason to find a job at a Japanese company." We believe it is important to provide opportunities to motivate students in the Japanese language learning environment, and we will implement the following measures. In addition, we will conduct a demonstration experiment to determine which of the following three learning patterns has the highest learning persistence rate.
