Dry mouth increases during the season of dry air. Dry mouth is a condition in which the amount of saliva secretion is reduced and the mouth becomes dry and thirsty. Saliva is also known as the "invisible mask" because it helps to control viruses and bacteria, and it also works to prevent infection as well as gum disease and tooth decay. This year, the influenza pandemic broke out two months earlier than usual and is raging across the country, causing school closings and class closings one after another. The decrease in saliva decreases immunity and makes people more susceptible to influenza, so it is important to be careful as we enter the winter season.

In the dry season, be careful of dry mouth while sleeping.

The number of orders for "good-night dentures," which are specially designed for sleeping because of dry mouth while sleeping, has been increasing. Good night dentures are denture-shaped mouthpieces made of soft material. The reason why people tend to have dry mouth when they sleep without dentures is related to the fact that the opening and closing of the lips is linked to the mesh of the teeth. Since the muscles inside the lips open and close in conjunction with the teeth, the absence of teeth makes it difficult to close the lips and keep them open, and also makes it difficult to swallow spit.

The bedroom also becomes drier, making it easier to feel thirsty, especially at bedtime. Sleeping with teeth in place reduces the risk of infection, as bacteria can enter through a dry, sore throat. In our recent survey on denture cleaning and bedtime use, the fifth most common reason for sleeping with dentures was that they leave the mouth open and dry the inside of the mouth.

In 2021, we began producing spare dentures with the exact same shape made with a 3D printer. Many users used to use them at bedtime, but some said they clenched their teeth unconsciously and had a lazy jaw the next morning. We thought it would be better if the dentures were soft enough to be used exclusively for sleeping, since they are not used for eating. We started trial production by applying the technology of denture-shaped mouthpieces for marine sports, which were under development. With the cooperation of eight monitors, we completed the prototype after about 50 iterations, adjusting the thickness in 0.5 mm increments. Since it is finished in exactly the same shape as the dentures in use, there is no sense of discomfort, and it is usually completed in about one week or two to three days at the earliest.
