From Warhol to Contemporary Japanese Artists Modern and Contemporary Art Auction to be held in Hanzomon, Tokyo on December 14, 2023

Bidding from PCs and smartphones with the use of online live bidding

Mallet Japan Inc.

Mallet Japan Inc. will hold "Mallet Auction", a modern and contemporary art auction featuring all 246 lots of artworks from Japan and abroad, on December 14, 2023, at Mallet Japan Auction House (located in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo).

The live-streaming auction "M-Live Auction" and the regular sale at the saleroom will be held on the same day.

Here are some of the highlights from the total of 246 lots.

Auction Catalogue

The cover of the last sale catalogue for 2023 features Andy Warhol's iconic work "Marilyn Monroe" (Lot 007). On top of this eye-catching work depicted with vivid colours, this sale also includes many other Pop Art prints, including Lichtenstein (Lot 008) and Hockney (Lot 016).

Also, following the canvas by Yayoi Kusama stunning the October sale, another canvas depicting a pumpkin (Lot 069) is expected to trigger a surge of interest just as the last time.

Three works by Ulala Imai are also included in the upcoming December sale.

"Blond Doll" (Lot 057), created in her early period, "Melon" (Lot 058), a recent work in which the motive has changed to food and dining table, and "Toast" (Lot 049), which the subject of toast attracted much attention after featuring on a magazine's cover. Imai depicts familiar motives while using classical techniques of oil painting.

In recent years, she has frequently exhibited her works abroad and is a remarkable artist with a growing reputation.

Preview Session

Next up is "Work 2A" (Lot 061), a canvas work by Chung Sang-Hwa.

Chung Sang-Hwa is one of the representatives of "monochromatic painting," an art movement started by Korean artists in the mid-1970s.

This work was created in 1967, when, as indicated by the inscription "Made in Paris" on the back of the work, the artist moved to France.

The technique of scraping off the paint with a knife and then applying additional layers of colours is a rare example of the artist's originality that led to his later representative techniques.

M-Live Auction, an online-only sale, will also be held in December. Among all the 130 lots in the sale, KAZUSA MATSUYAMA is making his first appearance at Mallet.

He moved to England at the age of 19 and made his debut as a painter after attending art school. Since 2020, he has been creating "Anonymous Portrait", a series of paintings depicting pop but nameless figures. His lot in this sale, "Anonymous Portrait -Playboy bunny- #1" (Lot 1011) is from the series.
