Bankruptcies due to lack of construction craftsmen accelerating, highest number of bankruptcies in the past 5 years New 3Ks (good pay, vacation, and hope) achieved double the business performance. Started recruiting a president for a new company!
ADJUST株式会社
The nation's small and medium-sized construction industry is facing a serious shortage of human resources, and the increase in bankruptcies is unstoppable. In addition to the aging of craftsmen, bankruptcies are becoming more noticeable due to the lack of applications from young workers and new graduates. (Location: Kita-ku, Osaka; Representative: Satoshi Masuda), a construction company, has succeeded in acquiring human resources through the new 3K system and is increasing sales. We are now recruiting a president for the new company.

A major factor behind the soaring costs of the Osaka Expo is the shortage of labor.
Bankruptcies due to lack of construction workers are accelerating and the number of bankruptcies is the highest in the past 5 years. According to the "Survey of Labor Shortage Situation" conducted by the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) for small and medium-sized enterprises by industry, the percentage is highest in the construction industry, reaching nearly 80%. The number of workers in the construction industry declined from 91,601 in 1995 to 54,767 in 2020, a 40% decrease over 25 years.
The number of workers in the construction industry is also aging, with approximately 36% of the workforce aged 55 or older and 12% aged 29 or younger. The "2024 problem," in which overtime regulations will be tightened from April 2024, will undoubtedly make it even more difficult to secure workers in the construction industry.
If construction sites that used to have a one-day workweek now have a two-day workweek, construction periods will inevitably be extended, even if construction methods are revised. In addition to the Osaka Expo to be held in 2025, redevelopment projects are being undertaken simultaneously across Japan, and if the reduction in working hours is added to the labor shortage, many construction sites may come to a halt.
The key to solving the manpower shortage is hiring women.
ADJUST Corporation has been improving its performance by focusing on the salary structure, working environment, and training of young workers in preparation for the 2024 problem. The construction industry has a strong traditional impression of 3K (hard, dirty, and dangerous), and we are working to shift away from 3K to a new 3K (good pay, vacation time, and hope) that meets the needs of the current era.
First of all, while the average starting salary in the construction industry is 200,000 to 250,000 yen, we have significantly increased the salary to more than 350,000 yen (300,000 yen for the six-month training period). In addition, until now, overtime work was routine because the estimating work was done after the craftsmen returned to the office after the on-site work. By employing female home workers, we have been able to divide the workload and reduce the amount of overtime. The construction industry is a male-dominated industry with few female workers, but at our company, approximately 40% of our employees are women, and since the target for hiring women in the construction industry is 10%, we are hiring by far the largest number of women. While valuing teamwork, we place the highest priority on children's events such as athletic meets and school recitals, as we believe that the most important thing is family.
And now, we have begun recruiting for a new president of a civil engineering venture to be established in 2028. It is rare to find a venture company in the civil engineering industry, but it will be established with the objective of strengthening the development of young people. We are looking for a young person in his/her 20s or 30s to help us to develop the company.
We want to change the image of the civil engineering industry.
A female homeworker says, "Working at home allows me to work at my own pace in my free time, late at night or early in the morning, as long as I deliver the work by the deadline. I can work at my own pace, even late at night or early in the morning, as long as I deliver my work by the due date. We are also planning to open a daycare center in order to make the civil engineering business more comfortable for women.
[Representative's Thoughts] "I want to set an example for my peers.
We want to be a company that sets an example for others in our industry. We also want to change the civil engineering industry. We want to change the civil engineering industry from an industry that no one wants to be in to one where the number one occupation is civil engineering. Imagine this. Buildings and roads will be constructed on a part of the map that was previously completely empty, and eventually a town will be built. That is the appeal and sense of accomplishment of civil engineering.
