Amulet Dentures Inc. (Head office: Sapporo, Hokkaido; Representative Director: Akira Ikeda), which operates a dental laboratory, conducted a survey of 548 denture users nationwide regarding the cleaning and bedtime use of their dentures, and found that many do not clean their dentures every day and that the number of people who wear their dentures to bed is increasing. The results of the survey showed that many people do not clean their dentures every day and an increasing number of people wear dentures at bedtime.

40% of people don't wash their hair every day! Insufficient washing

Dentures begin to be used by people in their 50s, and more than 60% of people over the age of 75 use them. Some people start wearing dentures as early as their 40s. As people get older, oral frailty causes an increase in the number of people who cannot chew food properly or swallow well. If the oral cavity is unclean due to incorrect cleaning methods, the risk of aspiration pneumonia and dementia also increases. According to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, aspiration pneumonia has become the sixth leading cause of death, and is now a major cause of death.

Although it is important to clean dentures thoroughly every day to prevent the disease, 38.1% of denture users do not clean their dentures every day, and 12.8% of them said they do not clean their dentures at all. Although it is recommended that dentures be thoroughly sanitized overnight with a cleaning solution after removing debris with a brush, only 42.1% of denture users follow the correct method. When asked how long they soak their food in the cleaning solution, 57.9% said overnight, while 19.8% said within 30 minutes, the second highest percentage, indicating that 42.1% of all respondents do not sanitize their food adequately.

Wearing dentures at bedtime is gradually spreading

When asked if they wear dentures at bedtime, 31.5% of respondents wear all or part of their dentures. A decade ago, it was common practice to remove dentures at bedtime, but data released by Kanagawa Dental University in 2019 showed that 28% of respondents said they sleep with their dentures in place, and this survey also shows an increasing trend. The most common reason for sleeping with dentures in place was "because the dentist told me to," at 19.7%, and one reason is that more dentists are recommending it. The most common reason for sleeping with dentures removed was "because I clean my dentures," at 49.9%. 24.8% of denture users indicated that they would like another set of dentures for sleeping.

To maintain good health, people should make it a habit to wear clean dentures at bedtime.

While the habit of wearing dentures to bed is spreading, very few people are correctly cleaning their dentures. Misperceptions about the time and method of cleaning put them at high risk of aspiration pneumonia and dementia.

We are pleased to find that wearing dentures at bedtime is also increasing in this survey, as it is expected to reduce snoring and prevent sleep apnea syndrome, in addition to preventing aspiration pneumonia and dementia. However, there are still many people who are aware of incorrect cleaning methods and the fact that immersion in cleaning solutions is only for a short period of time. Since many of the people we have made spare dentures for have used them at bedtime, we have started offering soft dentures specifically for bedtime so that they can be used 24 hours a day with clean dentures. We hope that this new habit of wearing clean, well-cleaned dentures at bedtime will spread in order to maintain good health.
