Yupiark Co. Ltd. (Head Office: Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director: Wataru Araki; hereinafter referred to as "Yupiark") is seeking partner companies for a joint project to develop a dementia prevention supplement by isolating active substances effective for dementia prevention from olive pomace.

Project Background

Yupiark was established in 2021 with the aim of developing health food and pharmaceutical products that contribute to the prevention of dementia. The company's corporate philosophy is to develop preventive methods based on the pathophysiology of dementia. Among other things, the company is focusing on the toxicity of amyloid beta oligomers, which are aggregates of the disease-causing substance amyloid beta.

The representative of Yupiark believes that reducing this amyloid beta oligomer toxicity is effective in preventing dementia, and have conducted research to find such a substance, discovering tyrosol, a natural substance found in olives and other plants, which was published as a paper in 2019. In fact, long-term oral administration of this substance has been shown to improve the pathology of Alzheimer's disease model mice.

Furthermore, the representative of Yupiark filed a patent application for this invention and was granted a patent (domestic patent: No. 7333626) in August 2023 for an agent for reducing amyloid beta oligomeric neurotoxicity with tyrosol as an active ingredient.

Outline of the Project

Tyrosol is considered to be an ideal active substance as a constituent of supplements for dementia prevention due to its superior characteristics such as novelty of action mechanism, safety as a natural product, brain transferability, and stability of action due to retention of activity even in metabolites. On the other hand, olive pomace is known to be rich in tyrosol. However, most of the olive pomace residue left after olive oil is extracted from olives is currently discarded. The main objective of this project is to isolate and prepare samples containing high concentrations of tyrosol from olive pomace tailings and commercialize them as health food products (project overview diagram).

Since such an application of olives is unprecedented, this attempt is quite novel. However, such commercialization requires careful planning, experimental evaluation, and optimization. It also requires a considerable amount of funding.
