What kind of scenery will we see at the end of our journey of life?  If it is a garden, I think it will be a different one for each person depending on their life: how they lived, what they have seen, learned and chosen.  The garden will be who you are at the end of the journey.  I hope my work will trigger in viewers’ mind some thoughts and questions such as “Oh, I would like to walk down such a path to reach the goal gate” or “What kind of garden would I like to walk through at the end of my life?”

Atsuko Imaizumi has been repeatedly visiting a wild garden in the mountains in northeastern Hokkaido for some years which has been a great source of inspiration for her creation.  She is fascinated by the garden where plants and flowers are just existing, living out their given lives, accepting their destiny with dignity and grace.

The theme of her last solo exhibition held at SISON GALLERy in 2021 was “gateway -a way home”.  Her paintings showed forests where the sun shines through the trees, trails in overgrown greenery, and animals that appear and disappear as if inviting us to go somewhere, evoking the feeling of saudade in us.

This time, she created watercolor paintings and embroidery drawings depicting gardens full of plants and flowers as a place you walk through toward the end of your journey; the theme is also inspired by the loss of her mother who passed away last year.  The gallery will be filled with works that invite you to imagine the life of a person (or that of your own) who arrives and walks through such a garden of joy and sorrow.

We hope you will take this opportunity to visit the exhibition.

We look forward to seeing you at the gallery.
