(Head office: Kobe City; President & CEO: Shoichi Fukui) in researching the effects of taking black soy polyphenol "Chronocare.

Three teams of players including "Team Laplace" cooperated in the research.

As a result, it was confirmed that the ingestion of black soybean polyphenol improved a part of the eSports players' cognitive function (short-term memory).

The results of this research were presented at the 9th Congress of the Japanese Society of Sports Nutrition held on September 9-10, 2023.

Title ：Effects of Black Soybean Polyphenol "CronoCare" on Performance of e-Sports Players

Abstract of Presentation:

Purpose: e-sports is a competitive sport using electronic devices such as computer games, and the number of players has been increasing in recent years. However, there is little knowledge on the bio-regulatory function of foods for players' physical condition and performance maintenance. Chronocare" (BE), a functional food material extracted from the seed coat of black soybeans, contains more than 58% polyphenols (the main component is low molecular weight procyanidins) and has high antioxidant activity. It has been reported that BE improves fatigue caused by display work and some cognitive functions that decline with fatigue by reducing oxidative stress. Therefore, in this study, we examined the effects of BE intake on fatigue, cognitive function and performance of e-sports players.

Methods: A placebo-controlled, single-blind, crossover comparative study was conducted on 15 male subjects (aged 18 to 35 years) who play e-sports on a daily basis. 15 male subjects took BE-containing capsules (300 mg/day) or placebo capsules and were examined before intake, on the 1st day of intake and on the 14th day of intake. On the day of testing, the subjects played a computer game that they routinely play for 3 hours as a fatiguing workload. Subjective fatigue (VAS method), cognitive function (NAKANOW, Eisai Co., Ltd.), and e-sports performance (shooting game score) were evaluated before and after loading.

Results: No fatigue or eye strain was observed as expected in the VAS test immediately after the loading, and no effect of BE intake was observed. On the other hand, when focusing on pre-loading, short-term memory improved in the BE intake group on the 14th day of intake compared to pre-loading, showing a significant effect compared to the placebo intake group. However, there was no effect of BE on e-sports performance.

Conclusion: BE ingestion improved short-term memory in e-sports players. On the other hand, more detailed studies are needed on the effects on fatigue and other performance.
