Shogakuan, the pagoda of Tofukuji Temple, also known as "the temple of brush strokes," will hold a special autumn viewing starting Friday, November 3, 2023. (Hosted by: Shogakuan An, Tofukuji Temple; planned and operated by Kyoto Connect, Inc.)

Shogakuan was founded in 1290 by Sanso Eun, the fifth abbot of Tofukuji Temple, and was built by Date Masayori, an ancestor of Oshu Date Masamune, a military commander of the Kamakura period (1185-1333). The temple is famous as a "temple of brush strokes," and a mound of brush strokes was built on the temple grounds in the Edo Bunka period (1603-1868).

◆Outline of Special Visits

Shogakuan, the pagoda of Tofuku-ji Temple, is usually closed to the public, but will be open to the public on the day of "Fude Kuyou (November 23)" every year. Upon entering the Shogakuan, visitors will be greeted by a garden of bright green trees and lush moss surrounding the Shoin, contrasting beautifully with the bright red autumn colors of the leaves. Visitors can take their time and forget the hustle and bustle of the crowds on the veranda of the Shoin, which was just completed this year. The main hall, tea ceremony room, and Okushoin (inner drawing room) will also be open to the public for a special viewing, as Bunpei, father of Jiro Shirasu, a well-known businessman of the Meiji and Taisho periods, donated part of his own residence, the Shirasu Residence.

・Viewing Period: Friday, November 3, 2023 - Sunday, November 19, 2023,

　　　　 and November 25 (Sat.) - December 3 (Sun.), 2023 (26 days in total)

・Hours: 10:00 - 16:30 (last admission at 16:00)

・Viewing area: Shoin, Main Hall, Tea Ceremony Room, Okushoin (Garden can be viewed from inside the building)

・Admission　Fee

Adults 1,000 yen, Elementary school students 500 yen, Infants free

　Groups of 15 or more:

900 yen; no group admission fee for elementary school students
