■About the Project

Koyasan Shinnoin Temple was established about 1200 years ago by Shinnyo Shino, one of the Ten Great Disciples of Kobo Daishi Kukai. It is a separate head temple of the Shingon sect of Buddhism, located in the Honchuin Valley, just next to the Danjo Temple in Koyasan, Wakayama Prefecture.

The main hall, built about 350 years ago in a storehouse style, houses important cultural properties such as a statue of the principal deity Fudo Myoo by Enchin, a standing gilt bronze statue of Akshobyonyorai from the Hakuho period and a standing wooden statue of Bishamonten (Bishamonten) from the Heian period. The temple also has a large collection of Buddhist statues, Buddhist ritual implements, and sacred scriptures that have been collected and carefully preserved by successive generations of priests over its long history of more than 1,200 years since its founding, including nationally designated important cultural properties.

These treasures play an important role not only in Koyasan, but also in the Shingon sect of Buddhism. However, the storehouses that have preserved and protected these treasures have been severely damaged over the years by wind, rain, snow, and age, and it has become difficult to maintain them. Therefore, we have decided to rebuild the storehouse in order to pass on the historical heritage to future generations in good condition.

The total cost of the reconstruction is 60 million yen. We are considering various ways to raise the funds, but due to the recent Corona disaster, the number of visitors to the lodgings has decreased dramatically, and we are unable to cover all of the costs.

Therefore, we have decided to raise funds through crowdfunding. This is a big challenge for our hospital. We would like to ask for your warm support so that we can continue to preserve the history that our predecessors have built up to this point.

Features

Shinnoin Temple was founded 1,200 years ago by Prince Shinnyo, the crown prince of Emperor Saga.

Prince Shinnyo was the third son of Emperor Heijo, and after becoming the crown prince of Emperor Saga, he became a monk and ascended Koya Mountain to become a disciple of Kukai, who later became one of the Ten Great Disciples of Kukai. He is said to have accompanied Kukai to the inner sanctuary when he entered the temple. He is also said to have painted a portrait of Kukai, and a portrait of Shinnyo Shino, who is said to have painted the image of Kukai and had it personally inscribed, still remains in Koyasan.
