Avento Life announced that its electric kickboard "VELMO STEP" will be certified under the Performance and Other Verification System for Specified Mopeds.

Specified mopeds are a new vehicle category that will be newly established when the law is revised in July 2023. The category covers mopeds with a rated output of 0.6kw or less, a length of 1.9m and a width of 0.6m or less, and a maximum speed of 20km/h or less. Electric kickboards of the specified moped type must be equipped with a license plate, liability insurance, and a maximum speed indicator light, but those 16 years of age or older do not need a driver's license and are required to wear a helmet.

The riding zones are roadways, bicycle paths, and bicycle lanes. In low-speed mode (6 km/h), bicycles can also ride on sidewalks and roadside zones where bicycles are allowed to ride. Electric kickboards with public road specifications that do not meet the requirements will still be classified as mopeds and require a license and helmet.

Avento Life is a Japanese electric mobility manufacturer that boasts an annual kickboard maintenance volume of approximately 45,000 units. The VELMO STEP to be released this time will be an electric kickboard of the specified moped model, with a cruising range of approximately 40 km on a single charge and a motor output of 350 W.
